Metallica

Boz called up all the way from England to talk about what Metallica was doing in the 80s. I went to a Metallica concert in 1985, and I’ve never seen so much dirty denim in my life. Anyway, as usual, there were technical issues, so if you notice ghosts in this podcast, just go with it. They’re thrash metal ghosts.
Catch more of Boz (and his co-host Dave) on the hilarious Here Goes Nothing podcast.

Right on target about Apocalyptica, both the good and the bad. I love having those songs on the MP3 player. Nice to get them as a “surprise” in shuffle-mode. Well worth the time to chase down a copy.
I also agree completely about the comparison between Slayer and Metallica. While some bands were busy posturing about their evil-ness, others were getting close enough to saying something profound. For me, “Disposable Heroes” is the track from Master Of Puppets that persuaded me.
That re-release of the garage recordings — Garage, Inc. — included everything from the original Garage Days Re(re)visited and more. It does include their versions of “So What” and “Whiskey in a Jar.” Not a Metallica CD, and not really meant to be, but the covers are very worthwhile (though somewhat over-hyped).
My friend Paul was talking with Bob Rock once and apparently Lars’ drumming was so incredibly offtime on the Black Album, Rock had to “air splice” all his drum tracks. That is, in the times before ProTools and digital editing, to correct an offbeat drum hit, you’d have to splice in a piece of blank tape cut the the right millisecond length in to make it on-time. Lars was apparently too much of a prima-donna to redo his drum takes, claiming they were “perfect” when Rock claimed they were a shambling wreck.
Anyway… that’s my ‘Tallica story. Also, no mention of Venom???
