The Final Broadcast
Big Bad Hair is moving … it’s now part of the new and improved Weather Station 3. This is a little goodbye and thank-you note from me and my son, who has a potty mouth. Now, I should tell you that I don’t condone, nor allow, this kind of talk, which is why it’s so funny. He just launched into it when I pressed “record.” He’s that kind of kid.
See you at the Weather Station!
Metallica
Boz called up all the way from England to talk about what Metallica was doing in the 80s. I went to a Metallica concert in 1985, and I’ve never seen so much dirty denim in my life. Anyway, as usual, there were technical issues, so if you notice ghosts in this podcast, just go with it. They’re thrash metal ghosts.
Catch more of Boz (and his co-host Dave) on the hilarious Here Goes Nothing podcast.
Cinderella: Long Cold Winter
I’d like to introduce you to an old friend of mine: Cinderella’s Long Cold Winter album. Morphing from 80s lipstick-metal to seasoned, gritty blues-rockers, Cinderella surprised the hairspray out of me with this one in 1988, and I still listen to it all the time. Also, I’ll tell you about ten 80s songs I never want to hear again.
Prince: Purple Rain
Mark calls from California to tell me about Purple Rain, Prince’s 1984 album, which he and I both discovered at the same time on opposite sides of the continent. Meanwhile, I accidentally killed my side of the original recording and was left with something that sounds like I was talking from the middle of a blizzard … which I technically was.
The Cult
Yeah, I know last week was Blue Oyster Cult. This week is The Cult. Next week is My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. Or maybe the Blues. Or Prairie Oyster. I’ll let you know.
Anyway, this week is The Cult. Jakob and I tried to cram it all into a half-hour, but it didn’t work. It’s pretty clear we could do a show a week about each album, or maybe each song, but we’ll save that for another day. What we settled on was a brief look at The Cult in the 80s.

Blue Oyster Cult: Imaginos
Big Bad Hair kicks off with a look at one of the 80s’ most underappreciated albums: the sci-fi rock opera Imaginos, from the Blue Oyster Cult. Joining me on this one is Rick, whose BOC knowledge is mighty and epic. Rick and I also appear on Starbase 66; follow the link here on the page for more of that.
Here’s the article Rick quotes in this episode
Note: There’s something wonky about the audio in this one. I’ll have it fixed by next time around.
Day One
Hi, and thanks for stopping by. We’re still at the hair stylist’s, so to speak, and episode 1 isn’t ready yet. But keep checking back. We should be rocking your world in a matter of days.
Big Bad Hair is a podcast about the music of the 1980s. This is not to say we won’t spin off into other decades here and there, and there will likely be talk of other 80s entertainment (like bad TV shows and cheesy teen movies). All in all, it’s an exploration of what it was like to come of age in the skinny-tie decade.

And as for me? Stay tuned.
